Job Lane, probably from Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, England, was a carpenter by trade. In 1664 he purchased the 1,500-acre "Winthrop farm" in Billerica for £230, paid not in cash, but by building a house in New London, Connecticut for Fitz-John Winthrop, son of the Connecticut governor. He also built the Great Bridge in 1668. Because his house stood in an exposed, remote location, he was granted special permission during the Indian troubles of 1675 to fortify it individually rather than relocate to a communal garrison. He married Anna, daughter of Rev. John Reyner, pastor of the Pilgrim church at Plymouth from 1636 to 1654 and later of Dover, New Hampshire. After about twenty years in Billerica, Lane returned to Malden, where he died August 23, 1697, aged 77.

Job Lane, mason, sells back for 80 pounds the messuage and about 50 acres in the southerly part of Billerica "which I formerly purchased of said Farley," with the same bounds as the 1700 deed (Lt. Whiting, Rev. Samuel Whiting's pasture, Nathan Shed, Concord River, Jonathan Hill, Concord Road) and the five acre right, with all houses, outhouses, orchards and fences.
